Double anniversary 2023, 100 years STRABAG AG and 125 years Ed. Züblin AG

This press release has:

Press release Plain text

  • Looking back with pride: anniversary website brings the past of both construction companies to life
  • Looking to the future: STRABAG and ZÜBLIN to continue their success stories as pioneers leading the transformation of the construction industry

100 years of STRABAG, 125 years of ZÜBLIN – 225 years of construction tradition, and two success stories within the STRABAG Group. Ed. Züblin AG and STRABAG AG are both celebrating their anniversaries this year – a double anniversary. Since their foundation in 1898 and 1923, respectively, the two companies have continuously asserted themselves on the market over the decades and through difficult times. And thanks to the innovative strength of their employees, both companies have grown to become German industry leaders in building construction, civil engineering and transportation infrastructures. Reason enough to look back with pride. Under the motto “Shaping the Future”, the joint STRABAG/ZÜBLIN anniversary website invites you to embark on an entertaining journey through the milestones and stories of the past, while at the same time taking a look ahead to the sustainable and digital construction of tomorrow. The goal is to continue to write the STRABAG AG and Ed. Züblin AG success stories, and important strategic steps have already been taken to move along this path. With its voluntary commitment to become climate neutral across the entire value chain by 2040, the STRABAG Group has positioned itself as a pioneer for the transformation of the construction industry. Accelerating the process of digitalisation, systematically reducing resource consumption and carbon emissions – these are the goals Ed. Züblin AG and STRABAG AG are working to achieve. To get there, the two companies are building on the innovative spirit and expertise of their employees, who, in addition to the companies’ strong regional roots, have been a key factor for success over these past 125 years.

Anniversary celebrations all over Germany
In this double anniversary year, celebrations to thank the company employees will be taking place at STRABAG and ZÜBLIN locations throughout Germany. The festivities kicked off in Dresden on 12 May with a joint celebration at Kulturkraftwerk Mitte, an award-winning renovation project realised by Ed. Züblin AG as general contractor. Numerous other anniversary events will follow throughout the summer and into the autumn. On 3 June, employees from all local corporate entities and their relatives – nearly 2,000 guests in all – will come together for a big family celebration at STRABAG AG’s corporate headquarters in Cologne-Deutz. In Lahnstein, the historic birthplace of STRABAG AG, the company’s Central-West Subdivision will be hosting an anniversary celebration on 16 June. Additional festivities will take place in Munich on 30 June at the premises of STRABAG BMTI and in Berlin on 9 September at the Haubentaucher event venue. In Hamburg, STRABAG will be celebrating its anniversary at the StrandPauli beach club on 14 July, while ZÜBLIN will be holding its event at the Fischauktionshalle on 28 September. On 16 September, Ed. Züblin AG’s headquarters at the ZÜBLIN campus in Stuttgart-Möhringen will host a large anniversary celebration with around 3,000 employees from all corporate units and their families.

Historical films, exciting stories, spectacular projects
In 1898, Swiss engineer Eduard Züblin established Ed. Züblin AG in Strasbourg with licenses for the then innovative method of reinforced concrete construction. Twenty-five years later, in 1923, the 32 shareholders of Straßenwalzenbetriebs vorm. H. Reifenrath in Niederlahnstein launched Straßenbau-Aktiengesellschaft, or STRABAG AG for short. (Ed. Züblin AG had relocated its headquarters to Stuttgart four years earlier after the end of the First World War.) All this and much more is available at www.jubilaeum-strabag-zueblin.de: Historical films and photos, interviews, spectacular construction projects, successful teamwork, exciting stories – the website celebrating the double anniversary will take visitors on a journey into construction history, with highlights, challenges and anecdotes that bring the two company histories to life. The site will continue to grow and remain exciting, as further interviews and stories are continuously added, and employees, business partners and customers are invited to share their personal STRABAG or ZÜBLIN moments with stories, photos and videos from construction projects and in-house events.

Ed. Züblin AG

Stuttgart-based Ed. Züblin AG, with approximately 15,000 employees and an annual output of around € 4.5 billion, is one of Germany’s largest construction companies. ZÜBLIN, which has been successfully realising challenging construction projects in Germany and abroad since 1898, is the STRABAG Group’s leading brand for building construction and civil engineering. The range of services covers all construction-related tasks – from complex turnkey construction, civil engineering and tunnelling to construction logistics, structural maintenance, ground engineering and timber and steel construction. Supported by the expertise of its Zentrale Technik competence centre, ZÜBLIN also offers integrated design-and-build services from a single source. We take an end-to-end view of buildings over their entire life cycle, with a focus on collaborative construction using our TEAMCONCEPT® partnering model while constantly promoting and advancing the topics of digitalisation, sustainability and innovation. Together within the STRABAG Group and with our external partners, we are working systematically to make the design-and-build processes resource-friendly and climate-neutral. Current ZÜBLIN construction projects include the EDGE East Side Berlin high-rise project, the U.S. Military Hospital Weilerbach and the approximately 2 km long airport tunnel in Stuttgart.
