  • ZÜBLIN completes region’s largest and most modern school complex on time and within budget
  • Low-energy building sets new standards in terms of sustainability in the construction of educational facilities

The Bertolt Brecht School Centre in Nuremberg, which was executed by ZÜBLIN in its role as general contractor, was officially inaugurated on Monday, 30 May 2022, in the presence of the Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder. The most modern and largest school complex in the region, with three schools and a sports hall for a total of 1,800 students, had already opened for instruction after the end of the Easter holidays. Following a construction period of around three years, the ZÜBLIN project team from the Bavaria and Stuttgart subdivisions handed over the large-scale project to WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH on time, within budget and ready for use. At the same time, ZÜBLIN’s Nuremberg business unit was awarded the contract to maintain the new building complex for the next four years.

The Bertolt Brecht School Centre (BBS) consists of a three-storey, monolithic complex with four staggered building blocks, a seven-court sports hall and generously landscaped outdoor areas. The new buildings, with a gross floor area of 38,700 m² and distinctive exposed concrete surfaces, were built on a 35,000 m² site near the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre. Besides its size, the BBS is also setting new standards in terms of sustainability in the construction of educational facilities. As part of an ultra-low-energy facility, the school buildings achieve a very high level of self-sufficiency through renewable energies. The energy supply for heating and cooling is largely based on environmentally friendly geothermal energy, which is harnessed via more than 100 downhole heat exchangers drilled to a depth of around 100 metres. The electrical energy demand is covered by green electricity and a photovoltaic system on the roof of the hall.

Success through a partnering and digitalisation

“Thanks to our experience with complex large-scale projects, we were able to contribute enormously to optimising the planning, the budget and the construction time even before the start of the construction phase,” explains Stephan Keinath, Member of the Management Board of Ed. Züblin AG. From the start of the execution planning and throughout the entire construction period, the ZÜBLIN team realised the project in close partnership with the client. A comprehensive cooperation and remuneration model based on the ZÜBLIN TEAMCONCEPT® partnering scheme was used for the commercial processing. Construction scheduling with LEAN.Construction methods as well as quality assurance with digital checklists also helped guarantee the efficient completion of the new building complex on time and within budget.

“Partner School for Competitive Sports”

The cooperative school centre consists of a municipal Gymnasium (advanced secondary school), a municipal Realschule (basic secondary school) and a state Mittelschule (middle school). With its sports instruction, the BBS is a “Partnerschule des Leistungssports” (Partner School of Competitive Sports) and was also awarded the title of “Eliteschule des Sports” (Elite Sports School) by the German Olympic Sports Confederation as well as “Eliteschule des Fußballs” (Elite Football School) by the German Football Association.
