Press release Plain text

  • 2018 order backlog reaches new record high
  • Construction output in 2018 increases to € 4.4 billion (+ 15 %)
  • Continued high growth rates in Q1/2019
Stuttgart-based Ed. Züblin AG, Germany’s leading building construction and civil engineering company, has again started the new year with the highest order backlog in company history. The very good order situation results in a high use of capacities and a positive outlook for the ongoing financial year.

The volume of new orders of the ZÜBLIN Group reached € 4.6 billion in 2018, a plus of 4.6 % over the previous year. This growth was solely attributable to Germany (+11.5 %). The four largest new domestic orders in 2018 were the main construction works for the second core S-Bahn route in Munich, Stadtquartier Südkreuz (Sections 1+2) in Berlin-Schöneberg, the Bertolt Brecht School in Nuremberg and the Welfenstraße residential and commercial development in Wiesbaden.

The construction output amounted to € 4.4 billion, a considerable increase over the previous year’s value of € 3.8 billion and a plus of 15 %. Growth in Germany, where the company generated 76 % of the output, amounted to 19.5 %; abroad, it was 2.0 %. Some 70 % of the total construction output was generated in turnkey construction, while the share of output in civil engineering, tunnelling and ground engineering amounted to about 25 %.

The order backlog grew by 2.7% over the 2017 levels to € 6.4 billion. The increase amounted to 4.4 % in Germany and fell by 1.3 % abroad.

On the reporting date of 31 December 2018, the ZÜBLIN group had a total of 14,058 employees, thereof 8,138 in Germany and 5,920 abroad. On 31 December 2017, the number of employees had stood at 13,739.

The ongoing 2019 financial year began on a promising note for Ed. Züblin AG. The order backlog increased significantly in the first three months of the year, gaining 39.6 % from € 914 million to € 1.3 billion. This development was due in particular to the positive development abroad, where, among other things, two new mining contracts in Chile and a further construction section of the sewer project Deep Tunnel Sewerage System 2 in Singapore were added to the books. The three largest new domestic orders for ZÜBLIN in the first quarter were the K32 Motel One Stuttgart, the office building THE TWIST in Eschborn and the modernisation of the motorway bridge across the Grumbach Valley along the A6 near Saarbrücken. The output volume of the first quarter surpassed the previous year’s value by 16.3 %, growing from € 909 million to approx. € 1.1 billion. The order backlog on 31 March 2019 stood at € 6.7 billion, 7 % above the previous year’s value (€ 6.2 billion). At the end of Q1/2019, ZÜBLIN had 14,247 employees, 597 more than in the first quarter of 2018.
