  • Sustainable growth thanks to timber hybrid construction
  • Mayor Albsteiger highlights ZÜBLIN’s economic relevance for the region
  • Existing building being modernised and renovated

After around two years of construction, the extension of the ZÜBLIN head office in Ulm at Finninger Straße 66 was officially opened today. Present at the opening ceremony were around 60 employees, Mayor Katrin Albsteiger, and Stephan von der Heyde and Stephan Keinath from the Management Board of Ed. Züblin AG. In her welcoming address, Mayor Albsteiger stressed ZÜBLIN’s role as an important economic driver in the region. “I congratulate you on the successful modernisation of the Neu-Ulm site and am confident that this investment will make ZÜBLIN even more attractive both as an employer and as a mover in the region.”

Positioned for the future
From March 2020 to January 2022, ZÜBLIN extensively modernised and renovated the existing building dating from 1995 and raised it by one storey. A 2,000 m² L-shaped extension building was also added. The extension building consists of three upper floors and a basement level and offers space for office workplaces, urgently needed modern meeting rooms, tea kitchens and a cafeteria. The project created a total of 87 new workplaces.

The € 10 million expansion was made necessary by the strong order situation in the region and the resulting need for increased staff and additional capacity. “We are pleased about the successful completion of the conversion work. The extension and modernisation will benefit our employees based here as well as the entire company,” said ZÜBLIN technical subdivision manager Michael Stiegeler. The extension also creates optimal conditions for the planned growth of the Ulm head office, as commercial subdivision head Markus Steck explained. A total of around 100 employees currently work at the Neu-Ulm site.

Climate-friendly office location
ZÜBLIN Timber GmbH handled the timber construction work on the extension building. The timber engineering expert opted for a timber skeleton and timber hybrid construction in which almost the entire supporting structure and the building envelope are made of wood.

Compared to reinforced concrete construction, the timber construction method saved a total of 104 t of CO2 during construction of the new building. Climate protection was given consideration in other areas as well, with the energy supply provided by air and water heat pumps and photovoltaic systems and the installation of EV charging columns and charging facilities for electric bikes.
